question.jpg

I am a German composer and was born in 1685. At the time I was born, Halle Germany was known as the kingdom of Saxony. I was the son of a barber-surgeon who looked unkindly on music as a profession. To please my father I studied law briefly while earning a livelihood as a church organist. I later moved to England where I was employed by the King and became very well known for my oratorios, my most famous being "The Messiah" which was only written in twenty-four days! I also founded the Royal Academy of Music in London. I wrote forty operas as well as vocal music and instrumental, organ and keyboard music. I died in 1759 and received the great honor of being buried at Westminster Abby in London.  Who Am I?

If you know who this composer is... be one of the first three to send me an e-mail with the correct answer!
